The story takes
place in a dystopian nation of Panem.
Selected boys and girls in the age of 12 to 18 must take part in the Hunger
Games, an annual event where the participants are required to fight against
each other and nature until one survivor is left. The main District focused in
this film is District 12. Katniss Everdeen (Lawrence) volunteers to take her younger sister's place. With Peeta Mellark (Hutcherson), Katniss travels to the Capitol. There, she was trained for the
Hunger Games under the guidance of former victor Haymitch Abernathy (Harrelson).
The nation of
Panem includes 12 Districts in it which is called by its number. Its activity
is under a “central government” called the Capitol.
The Capitol
forced the nation of Panem to send two tributes, a boy and a girl aging 12-18,
from each district to fight in the annual event, the Hunger Games. In District
12, the chosen girl was Primrose, Katniss’ younger sister, and for the boy was
Peeta Mellark. Loving her sister, Katniss volunteered to take her position.
Katniss volunteered to take Primrose's place
Then Katniss and
Peeta were escorted to the Capitol by chaperone Effie Trinket and mentor
Haymitch Abernathy, a former winner from District 12. Haymitch taught them how
to survive in this game, impressing on how important it was to gain sponsors so
that food and supplies could be provided well in the upcoming game.
Katniss performed
very well in the training, while Peeta did the opposite. She impressed everyone
by her ability in archery, but Peeta could only do body painting.
In this training,
some televised interviews were done. Peeta and Katniss took this attempt to
earn sponsors. He expressed his love for her publicly – and somehow it helped
them.
And the day of
the Game had come. Firstly Katniss
grabbed supplies from the Cornucopia, the stuffs place, where the contestants
started. But then Katniss decided to move away from the others by hiding up in
a tree. The Head Gamemaker, Seneca Crane, noticed this and sent a fire to the
forest so Katniss had to move. She searched for Peeta and at lastn joined the
Careers, Peeta’s alliance. She hid up in a tree again. Surprisingly they tried
to kill her, until then Peeta adviced them to wait till she came down.
The next morning,
when the Careers and Peeta were sleeping, Katniss noticed Rue, a young girl
from District 11, hiding up in a tree too. Rue gave the idea to Katniss to cut
the branch so that a nest of poisonous tracker jackers, wasps that can cause
hallucinations and death, would fall onto the Careers. Some of them died, but
Katniss was also stung. Rue helped Katniss until her consciousness recovered
and they became friends.
Katniss told her
that she wanted to destroy the Career’s food supplies, which were placed
together with some mines. Katniss worked together with Rue and succeeded. When
the security boy was distracted, Katniss arched the food supplies and they fell
down, causing the mines to blow up and destroyed their supplies.
Katniss went from
there and found out that Rue was caught in a trap. She freed her but then she
was killed by Marvel, another contestants, by spear. Katniss killed him in the
heart. Rue didn’t make it to stay alive. Katniss made her a little gravery and
put some flowers around it. The Capitol realised that the Game wasn’t running
well.
Rue's death
In the middle of
the Game, the rules changed. There could be two winners if they were from the
same district. Katniss searched for Peeta, finding him hiding at the roots of a
tree by drawing his body. He was wounded because of the Careers. They found out
that he was going back to her. Katniss and Peeta searched for a safe place so
that Peeta could rest.
When they had
found one, there was an announcement that what they need will be provided in
the Cornucopia. Katniss left to take medicine for Peeta. There, she was
attacked but then District’s 11 male tribute saved her life because of Rue.
She brought the
medicine to Peeta. He was healed.
For the final of
the Game, when four survivors were left, Crane sent beasts to the arena and
killed one of them. Three were left – Katniss, Peeta, and Cato, the leader of
the Careers. They fought and at least Katniss aims an arrow at Cato which
killed him.
They thought they
have won but then suddenly Crane changed the rules. There would be only one
victor. They decided to eat a poisonous berry. Just before that, they were
mentioned to be the winner of the 74th Hunger Games.
Haymitch told
Katniss that she had made many enemies by her actions in the arena.
I really
recommend you all to watch this film! All details of the film makes a great
sense to the audience. Imaginary settings were displayed like a real ones –
perfect editing. A great idea of governance from Suzanne Collins and all the
acting make the film has the world itself. I really got the feeling of how
nervous and terrifying it was to be in the Hunger Games arena without imagining
it – the actors make the feeling itself. This film is a great summary for its novel.
Okay, that’s all for this post. Do you have any different
opinion about this film?
Thank you for reading! :))x
